Texans will use Mario Williams at linebacker

Do you guys think this makes sense? He will be the biggest linebacker in the history of the nfl!

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans will use Mario Williams at outside linebacker in their new 3-4.
Mario is 6'7/290, so he'll be the biggest linebacker in NFL history. (Even bigger than Levon Kirkland.) The Patriots once considered pursuing Julius Peppers (6'7/280) to play outside 'backer in their 3-4, although Williams isn't quite as athletic. Still, it will give him a better chance at sacks than 3-4 end. Connor Barwin and Brooks Reed will compete for the job

ok heres what i see them doing. I see them running a 3-4 scheme but Williams will put his hand on the ground (will still do the same rush jobs).... Lets be honest he wasnt going to be in coverage anyway. But it makes life much easier on Williams because he doesnt have to re learn how to rush from a 2pt stance

Um, how is that illegal? DL can stand up without their hands on the ground and LBs can put their hands on the ground.

ok so a 3-4 linebacker can put his hand on the ground ... but it has to be over a tackle so yes mario could put his hand on the ground but they would be running a 4-3 and he would be considered a d-linemen instead of an olb

Theres no such thing as an illegal formation on defense. you can have anybody on the field (as long as it is 11 ppl) anywhere, in any stance....

Basically 3-4 OLBs are considered DEs anyway (they were just called OLBs to make them feel better lol) especially the weak side OLB aka the rush OLB..

Well let me rephrase that, the weak side OLB is considered a DE and the Strong side OLB is more considered a OLB, (think OLB on the LOS in the 4-3 under/over formations) he will be the player who will be matched up "more" in zone and he will be asked to cover the TE in man in some instances...And he is the peel player (he is assigned to blitz but if the RB goes to the flats on his side he peels off and covers him M2M)

Williams will be just fine...He should slim down a lil bit this offseason to help wit the transition

Elvis Dumerville use to be a 4-3 end and converted to 34 olb and his production went up...

Demarcuse ware had the same transition from college to the NFL and his production is always high

Lamar Woodley, James harrison, Terrel suggs, Joey Porter, Chris Wake are just some other examples off D-ends in 34 systems.. Williams will be just fine as long as he is rushing the passer

williams is too big. he runs a 4.79....cant play zone for shitt..

For your information, Elvis Dummerville was a defensive end In his first few years in the NFL and transition to OLB..
Williams is alot faster the most OLB's in the league... Williams is 6'7 or 6'6 and will take up alot of space in cov... He will be COACHED UP to play OLB and all the diff zones

I do think the texans switch is a huge mistake altogether, But I think Williams will be fine... when he slims down, Im pretty sure his 40 time will be quicker.. but its not like a 40 time speed is essential for a 10 yard dash after the qb

Texans switching to a 3-4 is a great move. The best team in the division Indy and Peyton has always had trouble with 3-4 defenses. Dal,Pitt,NE,SD,NYJ gave Indy fits.Why because the TE for the colts suck at blocking edge rushers.Dallas Clark can't block and the colts don't run up the middle so 3-4 is perfect for Hou

they dnt have the front 7 for a 3-4...they basically have used the last few yrs (besides this 1) building a solid personnel for a 4-3 under...that athletic wk side OLB is useless in a 3-4...How is the Sam OLB gunna transition?.. who is gunna play the DTs?
they will be out manned for quite some time at many spots...Wk OLB, 1 MLB, and 1 maybe 2 DLman are the only spots they have sure starters...

its not worth it, they have to change toooo many things. If some1 had told me Minn was switching to a 3-4 I would say" cool, nice move" but the texans just dont have it...

Watch the texans give up sooo many rushing yards, their DL will get pushed around

I dont think they should do that. Mario Williams was playing DE correct? I think Phillips is trying to turn him into a Demarcus Ware.
