Have had a lot of trouble stopping the run early in the year. Gotta into the lab and found this defense a couple months ago that has worked pretty well for me, so I thought I would share it.
46 normal speed package cover 1
1. pinch d line
2. spread linebackers
3. Globally put all linebackers in zone
4. take cb #3 (slot corner on the left side of screen) that is in a yellow zone, and put him in a purple zone and move him out wide enough to contain the outside run (a couple steps outside the farthest outside player on the left side of screen)
5. take your SS (slot corner on the right side of screen) that is manned up and put him in a purple zone and do the same as the previous step, containing the outside run to the right side of screen.
6. If time, take the mlb and corner #4 that are in yellow zones and move them on the outside hips of the DE's on their respected side and 1 yard back(this allows them to still help on inside runs, but puts them in better position to help on the outside runs.
7. Put free safety in spy and user him
I only run this set up with 2 Wr's or fewer. If they do pass, you have to key on the TE's running deep routes. If they continue to abuse TE routes that get behind the Purple, yellow, yellow, purples shell, I man up either the mlb or corner #4 that are in yellows to the TE, but keep them in the correct position to defend the run. The 2 corners are manned up, so it doesnt allow the offense to motion over an extra blocker, because the corner will follow.
Hope this helps
