If the heat comes from the edge only...block the RB to his outside shoulder (obviously talking shotgun) if it's coming through the gaps, block to his inside shoulder....that's why some people allow nanos to come thru even with 6 blocking...Same goes for TEs....block a TE inside if it's gap heat. Block the TE to his outside shoulder if it's edge heat. Yes I understand that even the world's worst players know this...but the next paragraph elaborates about stuff that even some of the BEST PRO PLAYERS just ditch...Undercenter pass scheme....Football concept fellas...I preach it...
Singleback is a bit different. RBs struggle with intense A (and some real quick hitting B) gap heat, so let's talk about america's favorite blitz...the DT blitz (smoke mid zone or inside blitz)...there are actually some really unique DL blitzes that the top ballers are cooking up right now. I myself just found an astonishing one...but...let's talk about America's D since everyone knows it...the DT is on the QB so fast that you can't get any throw (but stick) off from undercenter...Here's the easy counter. You know the heat is hitting you quick and thru the left a gap....so you have to slide the line left....Yes, I know this brings the other DT/OLB in (BUT THEY ARE FURTHER AWAY THAN THE FREE RUNNING LDT)....you're going to block the RB RIGHT....so even though the RB is blocking outside edge to the right, the slide protect overrides and carries his assignment into the A/B gaps on the right side, instead of edge heat focus...
Max protect is some people's first (and last) resort for any heat, and it doesn't need to be.
I'll be writing one of these every week or so....
