Crashing your D-line at the right time

Its only a few more days till Madden12 drops. I plan on using the 3-4 defense and was wonder about when are the best times to make your D-line crash left, right, middle, or pass? Is this for when you know a certain play is coming like if they are running to the right you tell the line to crash right or what?
